Actually, the reason we don’t use it today is because it’s incredibly inefficient over any significant distance, and also because at any useful transmission power it would induce current in a hell of a lot of places it wasn’t intended to.
Capitalism is awful, but sometimes the reason we don’t do a thing is because physics, not capitalism.
